I told you yesterday I would explain why Abbie and Megan were laughing when we were on the boardwalk taking pictures.

Well…it being Halloween Weekend and all, we happened upon a bicycle parade, BikaWeen or something or other. Actually, I should say that a bicycle parade happened upon us. We were already there.

Most of the costumes weren’t really all that funny.

But the antics were.

Some trying to get my attention to take their picture.

Some just getting in the spirit of the party.

Some drinking and driving riding.

A couple did bring a chuckle, for creativity, at least.

But I think the girls laughed because of the ones trying to get THEIR attention.

And now, you know the rest of the story.

Last night Abbie, my niece Megan, and I had a girl’s night after the baby shower. As we started walking the boardwalk from Fairhaven I realized the lighting was perfect and warned them there would be a whole lotta picture-takin’ goin’ on!

I loved this, but thought it needed a little Polaroid action:

They try to come across bad-a, but they’re just too sweet.

Five On Friday

1. I can’t believe that just last week AT THIS TIME about a million miles away, I took these :

Mom was commenting on how yellow this tree had turned all of a sudden. I wonder what it looks like now!

2. I saw the sweetest thing today. A girl got on the bus with no money, and the driver let her on but warned her that the afternoon driver might not take her home (the girl had already said she had no money). She sat in front of me and I was reaching into my bag for a dollar to offer her for her trip home when another girl across from me reached across the aisle and gave her 4 quarters. They were obviously heading to the same high school and were obviously not running in the same circle of friends. The girl who offered the money reminded me of the oldest daughter on Modern Family. She was primping, applying lipstick, using her iphone as a mirror, cute as a button…Her gesture was so sweet. I wanted to cry. Plus I kept my dollar, but that’s not why I was touched.

3. Tonight, sitting on the bus waiting to leave the station the driver went to the back of the bus and told a group of loud(ish) teens that he would not tolerate their feet on the seats. Then he reminded them he wouldn’t tolerate their language and would drop them off if he heard it again.

4. Last week one afternoon as a young father and two young children got off the bus at the back door, the little boy (about 3 years old) YELLED at the driver, “THANKS FOR LETTING US WIDE YER BUS!! IT WAS WEALLY FUN!!” The driver hollered back, “YER WELCOME!”

5. I love Bellingham’s bus drivers. They rock!

Fairhaven

I was in Fairhaven the other night. It’s one of my favorite parts of Bellingham.

I was sitting on a corner bench and looked both directions

and snapped a couple shots.

Sometimes I imagine what it would be like to live in an apartment above one of these buildings,

and be able to walk out the front door and go to Tony’s for coffee…

Or walk to Boulevard Park and watch the sun set.

…a girl can dream, can’t she?

Last night we went to Boundary Bay, one of our favorite places, to hear Bear Cove play. Aware that my expectations for fun were over the top, I feared I might be setting myself up for disappointment. I was wrong. For a number of reasons, Friday night at Boundary Bay was a blast:

The band was awesome, and put on a fantastic show!

We met up with our fiends John and Debbie, ALWAYS a recipe for fun, plus Caleb and Hannah and Nora, and Brett and Lindsay and Jack joined us. Jack is one of Nora’s favorite little people in the world, so there was no going wrong!

That Jack is the sweetest boy.

and I don’t think I have to say anything about this little bottle of sweetness!

So fun to watch them play

They agreed the pizza was great!

The evening was so warm and there was a feeling of not wanting it to end. No one rushed off after the band finished.

Two Ships in the Night

The other night when we were at Boulevard Park on the bay, there were two tall masted ships in the harbor. We noticed them. But didn’t really remark about them. Then out of the blue, one of them shot a cannon at the other and the sound was loud and deep; it shook my kidneys! i really don’t know if that’s the organ I feel when there is a loud deep sound like that, but that’s what I imagine it is. Then I remembered THIS ARTICLE about Lady Washington and Hawaiian chieftain.

See the gun smoke? Cool, huh?

I think we only heard one other blast. But don’t worry. They were shooting blanks.

The imagination runs wild thinking what that would have been like 200 years ago with real cannon fire being shot!

I love these.

For once I’ll stop talking

and just let you enjoy the pictures and the story they tell

without me feeling I have to butt in and draw your attention to some random detail

like Nora’s whispy hair and Caleb’s handsome face

or Hannah’s stylin’ shades that bring back the 70′s.

No, this is much better without all that.

Bear Cove

Last night my friend Carrie and I went to The Ridge, a wine bar to hear a local band, Bear cove. Garrett Lamp is the lead in this band and he and his wife are friends of Caleb and Hannah. I’d heard Garrett sing in a worship setting, but not in his band, and was I ever blown away! If you click the link be sure to listen to the sample songs there. Words Don’t Save is my favorite of those three.

The Ridge is a really small wine bar, and this group pulls in a crowd. I’d wanted to take more pictures, but it was so cramped, I admit I was feeling a bit self-conscious, being the only person in the room even remotely out of the 30′s decade, and for sure the only person there with even slightly graying hair. I did pull off a couple shots, though, and they are terrible, but I figure if I can set aside my pride long enough to have take them I might as well share them.

I just realized this post morphed from being about Bear Cove to about Abbie. My apologies. It happens. One last picture with Garrett in the background to redeem this post.

Because even though I didn’t get any good pictures, it was all about the music.

Taylor Shellfish Farm

Last weekend on our way home from Whidbey Island we stopped at Taylor Shellfish Farm. Rick’s been there before, and I’ve enjoyed the oysters and other seafoods he’s brought home but this was the first time I’d gone with him.

A cool feature of the farm is the picnic tables they have about with small kettle BBQs next to each one. Can’t you just picture going there on a hot summer day with friends and a bottle of wine or two? Yum.

So beautiful and peaceful.

I had no idea that Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs had done an episode there.
