Everyone who knows me knows my new obsession is my camera. Everyone knows I take it everywhere I go. And I use it. All the time. Sometimes I come home and upload my photos to my computer (see? I don’t even say “pictures” anymore…learning the lingo) and I feel so discouraged, like I haven’t learned a thing or improved even a teensy bit. Then other times I get totally stoked because I have a photograph that is amazing. To me. At least.
Well, a couple months ago I started submitting photos into contests. Online photo contests where other photographers, amateurs and pros, vote on my photos, and I can vote on others’ photos. People can leave comments, what they like or dislike about a photo, and can give you pointers to make it better, either through photoshop, or just better next time. (By the way, I almost never edit in photoshop. I end up liking them straight out of the camera better and revert them to original, except for cropping or brightening).
Today I received an email one of my photographs had received an award! I was so shocked. For one thing, it was one of the first that I entered into this particular site, and mis-categorized it. It should have been a “seascape” or “sunsets”, but I entered it as a “landscape”. One Very Helpful Person pointed this out right away. She never did say if she liked it or not. Just that it was in the wrong category. So, even though I entered this photo in haste, and put it in the wrong category, it won an award!
